2 December 2025, Vienna, Austria — At an Advent reception for the Österreichische Rundfunk (ORF) and media professionals held at the Priesterseminar Vienna on 2 December 2025, Archbishop-designate Josef Grünwidl emphasized the vital role of quality journalism in safeguarding democracy and strengthening society. Addressing more than 150 guests—among them journalists, media leaders and members of the ORF Foundation Council—Archbishop Grünwidl spoke candidly about the importance of balanced reporting and the Church’s responsibility to welcome well-researched criticism.
“I have no patience for exaggerated ecclesiastical oversensitivity,” Archbishop Grünwidl remarked. “Even when criticism hurts—if it is based on solid research—we should accept it with gratitude.” He expressed his hope for a media landscape that remains both critical and benevolent, stating that such engagement supports the Church in its efforts to “build alliances for the common good.”
Grünwidl, whose episcopal consecration and formal assumption of office are scheduled for 24 January 2026, underscored that accurate information is a public good, echoing Pope Leo XIV’s warning that freedom of opinion becomes meaningless when factual truth is undermined. He also praised Austria’s strong tradition of press freedom, public broadcasting, and high-quality journalism.

The evening began with a reflective Advent prayer service in the Santa Maria de Mercede Seminarkirche led by the Capella St. Stephan. Archbishop Designate encouraged attendees to make time for inner stillness during the Advent season, urging: “The most important road is the one that leads to myself—but it is often the least traveled.”
ORF Director General Roland conveyed his gratitude to the Archbishop-designate for valuing the work of media professionals. He highlighted the extensive coverage of key Church events over the past year—including the death of Pope Francis, the election of Pope Leo XIV, and Grünwidl’s own appointment.
The United Nations Correspondents Association Vienna (UNCAV) was represented at the reception by two members of its Board: Hermann Kroiher, Secretary General and Maria Zelda “Marizel” Rojas, Board Member. Their presence highlighted UNCAV’s commitment to press freedom, ethical journalism, and engagement with key institutions shaping public communication in Austria. Both board members welcomed Grünwidl’s strong support for journalistic integrity and the role of the media in strengthening a democratic society.
